Thor Aalo Ghonto (Banana Stem stir fried)

Thor is the stem of banana plant, the stem is cut into pieces and can be cooked into various recipes. Bengalis have special love for thor and it is easily available in local market. I have made a simple version of it.

Ingredients

  • Banana Stem
  • Green chilli/red chilli 
  • One spoon ginger paste
  • One half tea spoon cumin seeds
  • Turmeric powder
  • Red chilli powder
  • Jeera powder (cumin powder)
  • Garam masala (optional)
  • 1-2 tez patta (Bay leaf)
  • Coriander leaves (garnishing)
  • 2 spoon ghee
  • 2spoon sugar
  • Salt as required
  • Water 2cups if required
  • 2potatoes
  • Oil 3 spoon

Thor Ghonto recipe:

Cut the outer portion of the stem then cut the inner part into circular pieces removing the  fibre…Then cut it into thin small cubes. You can potatoes by cutting it into small cubes as well. After cutting put the thor under water add turmeric nd salt to prevent it from oxidising.

In a pan, pour mustard or refine oil, add jeera (cumin seeds) then green chillies and ginger paste and tez patta on medium flame add potatoes. Add turmeric powder and salt …After five minutes add the masalas (chili powder, jeera powder and garam masala)…Mix the thor after draining the water. cook it on medium flame, add water if required and when it’s cooked add little sugar ghee and lastly coriander leaves and serve hot.
